EPP Theory Seminar: John Joseph Carrasco: Counterterms as Tinkertoys



Invoking increasingly higher dimension counterterms to encode novel UV physics in effective gauge and gravity theories traditionally means working with increasingly more finicky and difficult operators. Can this be simplified? Yes! I will show that many higher derivative operators at four-points can be absorbed into simple higher-derivative corrections to scalar theories, which generate the predictions of local Yang-Mills and Gravity operators by suitable replacements of color-weights with color-dual kinematic weights as per double-copy construction. I will exploit the fact that Jacobi satisfying representations can be composed out of other Jacobi satisfying representations, and we will see that at four-points only a small number of building blocks are required to generate the predictions of these higher-derivative operators.  I will at least sketch out two natural double-copy striations at 4-points for these operators: the by now familiar adjoint-type (f^{abc}) description as well as a permutation invariant (d^{abcd}) type striation, each with their own advantages and associated double-copy prescriptions. These constructions saturate the higher-derivative operators contributing to the four-point supersymmetric open and closed-string tree amplitudes.
