EPP Theory Seminar: Teaching an old Higgs new tricks - Philip Harris (MIT)

Abstract: Four years ago, standard model production of the Higgs boson decaying to b quarks produced through the gluon fusion channel had not been observed at the Large Hadron Collider; it was thought to be impossible, despite it being the largest single Higgs production mode at the LHC. We present a new technique that relies on deep learning to observe a new and intriguing result on gluon fusion Higgs production to b-quarks. In addition, we show how the techniques that led to this result can be used to measure the hadronic decays of singly produced vector bosons. Finally, we show how this technique opens the door to a broad range of foundational measurements that allow us to further understand dark matter, the Higgs boson, and the fundamental properties of the standard model of particle physics.
